The geological activity that formed Montana's mountains and plains has exposed rock formations from many geological eras and most importantly the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods when dinosaurs roamed ancient North America. Rock formations rich in fossils are at or near the surface around Montana and often are found in areas with very little vegetation making it even easier for professional and amateur fossil hunters.
